Just like any other aspect of the world we live in, where there are laws governing our societies and the way in which we all live, there are also natural laws that govern our environment and the individual health of each and every one of us. I’ve noticed that while we seem to be able to manage to keep with society’s laws within reasonable bounds, many of us flout the natural ones that govern our health and our very lives without giving it too much thought.
That much is evidenced in the growing numbers of unhealthy people, especially those that have gained so much weight as to be labelled obese. As a nutritionist, I am constantly being consulted by people that have allowed themselves to become so large through the total neglect of their bodies that they’ve been told by their doctors that they must either lose weight or face dire health consequences.
Laws Are Meant to Be Obeyed
While no one is going to be put in jail for disobeying nature’s laws governing their own personal health, the fact remains that by neglecting their bodies, my patients are placing themselves in great danger. I can’t for the life of me figure out why a person would allow themselves to eat so much junk and drink so much soda. Don’t they know that’s why their weight skyrocketed and they had to keep buying bigger size clothes?
Apparently not! So many people treat their health in general (see: healthingeneral.com) like they don’t care about it and then cry when the doctor gives them bad news. Like they weren’t even expecting it!
Real Life is Stranger than Fiction
I was consulted by a new patient the other day who weighed an eye watering 260 pounds and her height was only five feet two. Despite her relatively young 32 years of age, she looked more like she was heading for 50. She was having trouble finding clothes that would fit her. Yet she didn’t think she was so much overweight, because no one had told her so.
It was only when she became stuck in her bathtub and the fire brigade had to be called to rescue her did it dawn on her that she might need to lose some of that excess weight! After consulting her doctor who suggested lap-band surgery, she was sufficiently jarred into the harsh reality of her situation.
I worked out a long term diet plan for her and I could tell she was not happy at having to stop eating super size junk meals at a certain fast food restaurant each day. And that included no more super size soda or milkshake that she always had to accompany that gargantuan meal.
I just hope she has the discipline to stick with it and uses the laws governing physical health to improve her physical size!
