Study Options for Students Online

It must be hard to imagine being a student before the age of the internet for todays students.  For those of us who studied before the 1990s, visiting the library was probably a much more regular experience.  Today you can usually access most of the study materials you need online.  Most colleges have an online system available to – some even deliver your book to you if you need the paper copy.

But the internet doesn’t just stop there for study aids, in fact the limit is usually your own imagination.  Take for example studying languages – how many people studying something like French or Italian had to wait for a holiday or a gap year in order to regularly hear and practice with native speakers.  Nowadays you can log on to yoru PC or Xbox and hear a variety of languages spoken in groups and online communities.  One student I knew studying Italian used to login to an Italian Call of Duty clan on the Xbox and play alongside Italians to practice – study certainly wasn’t that fun thirty years ago.

m6replayshows

Imagine the benefits to a student of watching TV shows and films in the language you’re trying to learn. In the past this would have been unfeasible to arrange but now it can usually be achieved very easily.  If you’re learning French for example – go and find the M6 Replay site which broadcasts loads of TV shows dubbed in French.

There are some problems in that many of these sites now block access outside their  country but there are ways around it.  You just need to find access to a proxy or VPN server to bounce your connection through.  It sounds more complicated that it is, but basically to watch British TV online for example you just need a proxy in the UK.

You can use any device most use a PC or laptop but the technology can be adapted slightly to use other media devices like tablets and Smartphone.  This post from the above site illustrates how to access foreign sites like the BBC Iplayer on an Ipad, all you are doing really is changing your IP address to match the location of the destination site – there’s a page of information on the previous site – www.uktv-online.com.

It’s easy to forget about these resources when you’re studying particularly if you’re college or University doesn’t highlight them. But for most students it enables them to expand their study options and in some cases make if even more fun and effective than traditional learning.

Is Studying at College Really Worthwhile Anymore?

It’s a debate that’s being enacted throughout the world, rising costs mean that the price of a higher education is more than ever before.  So is a degree or diploma worth the costs, is it worthwhile leaving college with a huge student loan to start off your working life?  In Europe that statistics are quite chilling – countries like Spain and Greece have huge numbers of graduates – up to 40% of young people have a degree level education.  It sounds positive until you meet them – highly educated young people who have been unemployed for years.

When you speak to a microbiologist with a post graduate degree who has never had a real job in her life.  Unemployed for three years after completing a gruelling degree and burdened with thousands of Euros of debt as well.  You start to think seriously – is it all worth it.  High levels of education has not protected Europe from the recession, in many ways the jobs that graduates traditionally seek were the first casualities of the recesssion.  We are left with low level, low skilled jobs which graduates are actually at a disadvantage in applying for.

Would you employ a graduate with a masters in Physics to clean your offices?  Or would you suspect that they’d disappear for something better at the first opportunity? Unfortunately for our graduates in most places there is nothing better and low skilled jobs are all that there are.  Of course the recession has another impact on Government spending, meaning that welfare support is also being slashed to manage the huge deficits.

Of course the jobs situation would likely be even more depressing if suddenly the numbers going to college dropped.  Those numbers of 30,40 or even 50% of unemployed young people would spiral even higher. It is also essential for any economy that young people are educated, high levels of education have a large impact on economic success, even though it doesn’t always seem that.

What is essential is that the financial burdens on our students is limited as much as possible.  Loan schemes and deferred payment options help students study without the crippling levels of debt that act as serious disincentive.  There is hope through the medium of the internet in reducing the cost of traditional education.  Online education is seen as the future, with already many of the world’s most successful universities offering courses online.  Any student with a reasonable internet connection, a laptop or PC, can sign on an complete a course at one of the best universities in the world.  It’s a huge benefit and shows that the internet is not all about playing games, messing about on Facebook or watching movies on the American Netflix !

Education is essential to building a successful and well rounded society.  People with degrees are proven to contribute and take part more in society, for instance volunteering for charities and voting.

Why Would You Consider Attending A Community College?

Depending on your personal situation, attending a community college may be the best course of action when looking at continuing in education.  It is often found that residential colleges offering long term courses just aren’t a good fit for most people.  If this is you, do not be downhearted.  Check out these great reasons why you may find that community college is a better choice for you;

You may have a family; If you have a family and you need to go to work in order to provide for them, you may find community college is your best option for continued education.  Most community colleges offer courses during the evening and weekends and this will allow you to juggle work, family and study.  This would prove to be very difficult at a residential college that only offers lectures during the day.

Your career doesn’t need high academic levels; If you are hoping to follow a career in a vocational, technological or service business or industry then it is unlikely you will need to gain a full Bachelor’s degree.  If you only need to become certified, then community colleges can be the best option.

Don’t get priced out of further education; If you are short of money, but still want to pursue further education then community colleges can offer you courses at a much cheaper rate than residential colleges.

Unsure of wanting further education; If you still are not totally convinced that you wish to pursue education then residential courses can be a very costly experiment.   Community colleges are not as expensive and can allow you to grow into an opportunity.

Just didn’t get the grades; If you found that your test results were not good enough to get into the residential college of your choice then a community college can be a really great stepping stone so you can improve on your academic abilities and try again in the future.

Growth of Social Media Courses

Only a few short years ago the idea of taking a degree in social media would have seen ridiculous.   Imagine a BSC in Facebook or a Twitter Diploma, but the reality is that these sites now form a vital role of any marketing campaign.  Ten years ago, a campaign could be initiated with a couple of phone calls and a simple press release.  This is not the case in todays world of social media.

The colleges across the world have identified this has a huge opportunity to bring in a whole new range of courses to encompass these new skills.  There are a whole host of new courses available particularly in media and journalism strong colleges.  They come in a variety of flavours but most focus on updating students with the very latest in digital communications.

Web site design and development are all included but aswell traditional skills such as writing content need to be adapted for the online world.  We’ve all seen how companies and famous individuals have made terrible blunders by underestimating the reach of a late night Tweet or a careless online remark.  The potential for damage exists as well as the huge gains that can be made from a very accessible resourse such as Twitter, Facebook or any one of the many social  networking sites.

Some of the more comprehensive courses will cover the legal and technical sides of marketing using the internet.  Skills in areas such as Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) and the legality of digital publishing are extremely important particularly when marketing for a global brand.  Students can learn in these courses about other technology like Geotargeting which allows a different message be distributed to different locations – like this.  For example you can restrict access to promotional videos on sites like Youtube very easily.  Make a video open to one country and others get a message informing them it’s not available in another – like this site demonstrates – http://www.theninjaproxy.org/just-interesting/video-not-available-in-your-country/.

These new college courses also represent a chance for older people to retrain and change careers.  Using these new skills to change the direction of their vocation, often utilising existing skills in a new environment.  Many people find these courses a chance to break into an area that would not have been accessible previously.

Community College for all

Community Colleges provide a much needed boost to families who may have financial worries when it comes to encouraging their children to go on to higher education.

Children who come from a less privileged background don’t need to give up on their dreams simply because they cannot afford to. You often hear single parents worry about the future of their children as they feel that they would not be able to support them financially at school, they should not have to do this.

stack-of-books-1001655_640

Despite the obvious benefits, Community Colleges have their critics with many people stating that it makes the distinction between classes wider in society, and other, perhaps more conservative views suggesting that those who cannot afford higher education should not be awarded this privilege and they clearly have not worked hard enough. It is this mind-set that increases the stigma surrounding Community Colleges.

They are important resource for bringing education to people who may have previously  missed out.  Just like the growth of the online educational resources (MOOC) which also have accessibility high on their list of advantages.  Remember the internet is not just about leisure and relaxation, although if Netflix have their way that will stop too if you live in the wrong country – read this for more information.

We live in a society now where equality is high on the agenda, and we should all be given the same chances in life, especially when it comes to academic growth. Learning is a source of enjoyment that should not be taken away from other simply because they do not have the ‘ideal’ background. Community College gives more people the chance to grow and this should be encouraged.

Stay Local or Travel

I had an interesting discussion with a few students this weekend, primarily on the subject of where is best to study?  The group where split between looking to study at a college nearby your home and those who wanted to study as far away as possible!  There’s probably no right or wrong answer but I must admit I did side with those who were a little bit more adventurous.  For me studying at college is about more than just the subject you study, it’s about taking those first tenuous steps into real life.  One of my endearing memories on my first term away from home is trying to figure out how I got my clothes clean.   It sounds stupid but the thought had never, ever, occured to me, but eventually I found myself in a laundrette.  I made loads of mistakes there, but slowly realised what I needed to take, how  the machines worked and by the end of my degree I actually rather enjoyed it.

marrakeshview

Of course, if I’d lived near home I’d never have bothered with this problem, simply delivering my laundry back home to my mom every weekend.  It sounds trivial but I think it’s a great example of learning to become self sufficient.  There needs to be a time when you learn to take those first few steps of actually running  your own life, I think college is a great time to do this.  In reality you don’t need to be too far away to achieve this, anywhere will do as long as the move doesn’t involve a weekly trip back home.  I can certainly see the benefits of living at home and going to a local college – financially it’s a whole lot cheaper.

But if funds allow, I’d advise getting as far away from home as practical. If you’re wealthy, try another country, especially if you’ve got a language element to your course.  Where would it be best to learn Italian, downtown Chicago or a college in Napoli?  You’ll be sad, nervous and indeed somewhat homesick but the experience will be so much more rewarding.  IN fact in the internet age, it’s so easy to stay in touch with home using Skype, email and messaging systems.  If you’re a bit lonely you can normally use a VPN or proxy server to connect back to home related TV stations too.  When my friend went to study in America he used a security program which allowed him to watch BBC TV anywhere, it was he said a vital link to back home – here’s how http://www.uktv-online.com/.  Not sure I’d miss my American TV stations as much, but then again perhaps I might.

The simple truth is that where you study is often restricted by other factors but if you have the chance I’d urge you to get as far away from home as possible !!!

Planning ahead for College

Thinking about what you’re going to do in life can be a daunting thing. How many times have you been having a conversation with a friend about careers, only for one of you to say something like “I’ll worry about that when it comes around”? Planning ahead for your career is really the only way to find a job that you can see yourself doing for a long time, as well as finding one that will make you happy. While we are young, and developing a view of the world, we have an idea of what we want to do based on our experiences of these jobs; I always wanted to be a fireman as they seemed strong, brave, and valued members of society. I often read blogs of parents of young families and think about what measures they have in place for their children to achieve what they hope to.

Once they have this idea they may wish to influence their children, or help them to plan ahead, and then thinking about what to do at college or university becomes an easy option. Too often people go to university with no idea about what they want to do with their lives and either end up dropping out, or completing a degree that they have no interest in, this means a waste of time and a lot of money. It can put your life back a number of years as you then waste time thinking about what you wish you were doing.

The important thing is to do your research, and of course the internet is the perfect place to test this.  If you’re looking to investigate abroad then you’ll be well advised to buy IP address from a VPN service which will allow you access to more resources in that country.

It will make a huge difference, not only will you be able to make a more informed choice. You can also get many more ideas than might be available from your immediate circle, investigate foreign colleges and Universities.  See what they offer and how much they cost, sometimes studying in a foreign university might be cheaper than you think and it offers other chances for personal development.

Planning ahead for college or university will save you time and money, as well as meaning that you will have more years in a job that you actually want to be doing and that will make you happy.

Community Colleges Prepare Students for the Future

The curriculum at community colleges now more so than ever prepares students of all ages for successful careers in almost any discipline.  Just ten years ago finding a college that offered courses in online marketing or web analysis was an impossible task. Today it has become the norm.

There has clearly been a shift in the types of courses offered at most community colleges.  The course work more closely aligns with the types of jobs that are available in the job market.  Students are able to take one or two courses in a subject to help them decide where their strengths and interests lie.  Modern subjects like Search Marketing can help a student decide if a web-related job is right for him or her.

Many community colleges even address subjects that appeal to internet entrepreneurs.   Course work can help a student with basics, like what kind of business to form, as well as more advanced subject matter, like filing for a trademark.  With the right web knowledge, a student can graduate and go on to build out a successful web business in almost any area.

Ecommerce businesses in almost every industry have been growing by double digits over the last few years.  Even a business that focuses on something as specific as ink cartridges can earn an entrepreneur a nice salary.  With the right idea the web makes anything possible.
