Academic Support

Tutoring

Central College provides a free peer-tutoring service to all students who want to increase their skills in specific courses. Peer tutors are chosen by professors and trained by the Coordinator of Tutoring on how to best work with students. Each semester, large numbers of students take advantage of both drop-in tutoring at scheduled times as well as on an appointment basis.

In addition to tutoring, Supplemental Instruction is available for many first- and second-year courses. Upper-class students who excelled in these courses are nominated and receive special training. These students attend class and facilitate group study sessions that support student learning.

The Central Difference

Accomplished Tutors

All tutors are recommended by professors for their excellence in the classroom. Before working with students, they receive special training from the Coordinator of Tutoring on how to best work with students. Often, tutors also benefit from these interactions as they hone their expertise in a given subject.

Accessible Tutoring

At Central College, tutoring is not designed only for remediation. We intentionally work with students at all skill levels to improve academic achievement and enhance a student’s ability to learn.

Supplemental Instruction

Central College offers group study sessions led by a student who has taken a course before and excelled. In addition to attending all classes, the SI leader holds weekly study sessions for the whole class. These are typically offered for first- and second-year courses that are traditionally challenging.
